A sweeping romantic drama that is a surprisingly faithful version of Pasternak's novel about doomed love, set against the background of the Russian Revolution and following decades.
Filmed in Finland (when the Soviet Union refused co-operation), it elevated Julie Christie to international stardom, gave great roles to Rod Steiger and Geraldine Chaplin and is credited with salvaging the financially troubled MGM studio.
