One of the finest ‘Poliziescho’ (police-thrillers) to emerge from Italy in the last few years, and a smash hit at the box office. Writer/director Andrea Di Stefano is assured with every gripping frame. From the title sequence, we are drawn into an intelligent, taut crime-thriller that keeps surprising. Franco, played by Pierfrancesco Favino (Italy’s most recognised actor), is a family man and cop called to investigate a seemingly simple crime scene the night before his retirement. He is unwillingly drawn into the longest night of his life. Favino is riveting, bringing a likeable, relatable quality to the police lieutenant. Director Andrea Di Stefano skilfully plays with time sequences, masterfully unravelling a staggering chain of events. I was genuinely impressed by the polish in this suspenseful, assured film with brilliant camerawork, world-class performances, and a pulsating musical score set in a Milano I’ve never seen before. - Paolo Rotondo
